What we mean by "Mayo Clinic Aproved"
Testing the Efficacy of Glucosamine Sulfate
The Mayo Clinic took a closer look at Glucosamine and made some very interesting observations, including "available evidence from randomized controlled trials supports the use of glucosamine sulfate in the treatment of osteoarthritis..." In giving Glucosamine an "A" grade for the treatment of mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis, they reported that "based on human research, there is good evidence to support the use of glucosamine sulfate in the treatment of mild-to-moderate knee osteoarthritis.
They went on to give it a "B" grade for general osteoarthritis, citing in particular that "several human studies and animal experiments report benefits of glucosamine in treating osteoarthritis of various joints of the body" and "some of these benefits include pain relief, possibly due to an anti-inflammatory effect of glucosamine, and improved joint function." It should be noted, however, that the evidence supporting these findings is "less plentiful than that for knee osteoarthritis and more study is needed in this area before a firm conclusion can be made." Still, the positive response and anecdotal evidence lend credence to their overall grade of "B" for the efficacy of Glucosamine Sulfate in the treatment of osteoarthritis.
